We spent the majority of our last week in Orlando at the Red Lion Hotel in Kissimmee. I had another hotel booked, but after reading the recent positive reviews on Trip Advisor and the fantastic rate of $66 CAD a night during our trip, I couldn’t say no.
I was unfamiliar with the Red Lion brand, but it is from the West Coast. Up until fall of 2015, the hotel was named Maingate Resort and Spa, and from what I’ve read, many updates have been done since then.
From the outside, the hotel looks like many other aging resorts in the Orlando area; 2-storey, outdoor entrances, multiple buildings. On the inside though, the rooms have been updated with many modern touches (including a Keurig – yay!), bedding, new TVs, fresh paint and what appeared to be a freshly re-tiled bathroom and vanity area. I’m not talking super fancy, but it was a better looking and cleaner room than we had a mile down the road in another well-known chain… which cost over twice as much per night.
It was chilly most of the week we were in Orlando, (ok, in Florida they were saying it was freezing, but we are Canadians, yo) so we didn’t expect the pools at the hotel to be part of our stay, but they were. Oh my goodness they were heated, and heated well. There are 3 good-sized pools on site as well as kiddie pool. It was a cold run back to our room, but we survived. There we other outdoor amenities such as a fire pit area, playground and basketball, etc. but we didn’t get the chance to partake as we were too busy park-hopping.
As a home-base for days at the parks, the hotel is a perfect off-site hotel for families who are looking to save a bit of money. There was nothing about our room that I was concerned with, the front desk staff was friendly and efficient, our room was well cleaned and stocked each day, and the grounds/pools were kept up nicely.
Would we stay here again? Without hesitation. Did I mention the Red Lion is about a mile away from the entrance to Walt Disney World? It’s close. I don’t think you’ll find better value along the Irlo Bronson strip.
