If you are trying to either eat healthier, lose weight or both, every choice matters. For example, I know that most of the time I would rather have my healthy fats in the form of delicious avocado on my lunch panini than hidden in my dinner’s stir-fry. A combination of frying and steaming, the Chinese method of steam frying allows me to do just that.
All you need to steam fry is a decent, heavy bottomed skillet, I prefer non-stick, and a liquid of choice, water or low-sodium broth work perfectly.
I made this Chicken & Rice Noodle Stir-Fry using the steam frying method. Here’s how I did it:
Chicken & Rice Noodle Stir-Fry
- 1/4 package Blue Dragon Rice Noodles, hydrated as per package instructions.
- 1 large boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into small bite sized pieces.
- 1 bag Stir Fry Veggies (this mix contained broccoli, snow peas, carrot and cabbage) or 3 cups various vegetables of your choice, sliced thinly.
- 1 pouch Blue Dragon Stir-Fry Sauce of your choice. This night, I used Szechuan Pepper. It’s given a 3 pepper rating (the hottest they offer) and they are not kidding, it’s spicy!
In a large non-stick skillet over medium heat, add the diced chicken and toss around in the pan, adding water, about a tsp at a time, to create steam and assist in the quick cooking of the meat. Once the chicken pieces are cooked through, remove them to a bowl and start cooking the veggies.
Like the meat, the veggies are steam fried in a moderately hot skillet, adding water (or broth) 1 tsp at a time, creating some steam that will help soften the veggies, but at the same time, keep them crispy. Once the veggies are hot and cooked a bit, add back in the chicken and the hydrated and drained rice noodles (I like my stir fried veggies to still have quite a bit of crunch, but if you like yours cooked a bit more, just cook them a bit longer with a couple more teaspoons of water).
At this point, you could simply season the mixture with some soy sauce and have a perfectly delicious meal, but by tossing it all in one of Blue Dragon’s Stir-Fry sauces, you easily get an authentic taste of the East.
