One thing I have never, ever done is posted one of those Facebook statuses that are supposed to show how much I really, really care about a cause (and am heartless if I don’t). I’ve never posted the colour of my underwear, nor have I had a giraffe as a profile photo.
I just can’t do it.
What I will do however, is take the time to write this post because I was kind of tickled that Laura at My Life in the Sun thought to name me as one of her picks for this blog tour. This tour is all about getting to know some of us bloggers a bit better. Although Laura is a local Halifax blogger as well, I didn’t meet her ‘in person’ until the Blissdom Canada Conference last year (we will both be there this year too… hint, hint!).
1. What am I working on?
Right now I am focusing on building the Family Travel section on my blog. Since being diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic this past spring, I have been working (and succeeding) at getting back into a healthy lifestyle and enjoying smaller portions, which means less baking and cooking in general. Having my family travel section, as well as some fun reviews and giveaways on the go keeps my creative juices pumping until I get back to my Kitchen Diva self.
2. How does my work differ from others of the genre?
I think all bloggers are different, that’s what makes us all awesome and interesting. I’ve never been one to follow the ‘rules’ of blogging and that is why I originally started my blog – to have a place that was all mine and where I made the rules. Yes, I may be a control freak… but I’m working at it.
3. How do I write/create what I do?
I can find inspiration almost anywhere. My recipe for Hali-Dip was spawned from a silly conversation in the car with Hubs. When I roasted radishes, I just wanted to see what would happen (turns out they are delicious!). Food trends of course, are always fun. The most important thing I need to do when I think of a great idea is write it down immediately. If I don’t, it’s gone. I have lists on my desktop, on my phone, and a notepad in my purse. I really need to get some sort of white board for the shower, it’s another place where my mind wanders and inspiration strikes.
4. How does your writing/creative process work?
I have no idea. LOL. Generally I take the list of ideas and pick whatever strikes me to write about. I know many bloggers calendar and schedule posts, but I tend to write whenever inspiration strikes. Working with sponsors, sometimes I have deadlines to work with, and while I’m never late, I sometimes am close, waiting for the time to be just right.
I write all of my posts right in WordPress. I generally write a whole post and then go back to edit and spellcheck. Hubs will usually read posts the day after they post and will let me know if he catches any boo boos I may have missed.
Most of the photographs on my blog are taken with my Canon Rebel XS dSLR. I bought this camera when Chelsea was born, and took a few classes after the fact. Many of my earlier blog photos are actually better than my recent ones because I had the time to stage everything just so… lately I’m lucky to get a photo at all. With Chelsea starting school this year, I plan on getting back to my photography, so fingers crossed, some better photos are to come.
I LOVE Instagram! A photograph can tell such a story. My Instagram photos as well as ones I tend to post on Twitter are all from my iPhone 5. Occasionally, they are used on my blog as well if it’s a pain to lug the dSLR to a destination.
I’m not one much for post-editing of photos, so what you see is generally the photo as it was taken, if I can do it on iPhoto or an app on my phone, that’s as far as it gets. Sometimes when I want to get all fancy schmancy and fun I’ll add some embellishments on PicMonkey.
That’s about all I have. Now, it’s my turn to nominate 3 bloggers who I’d like to know more about. If you are too busy or simply don’t want to write a post that’s fine. You will not get 7 years of bad luck, I promise. Who knows, maybe you will get 7 years of bad luck if you do post?
The Brunette Baker (aka Jenny) While #JennyBrokeTheChicken and she has an infectious laugh, we didn’t get near enough time on the #BBFFarmTour to get to know each other. Her recipes are awesome and her photographs are what I want mine to be. She rocks.
Confessions of a Fitness Instructor (aka Suzi) At a Red Lobster in downtown Toronto, 2 bloggers found out they actually grew up in the same tiny community in the Annapolis Valley. You guessed it, it was Suzi and I. Not only was I in grade primary with her big brother but we lived like half a kilometre a part. Suzi is awesome because she is fit, teaches more fitness classes than I can count, let alone do, she loves cupcakes and still has time to blog.
The DIY Dreamer (aka Christine) Like Jenny and Suzi, I had to travel to Ontario to meet Christine. From Quebec, Christine is brave. I know this because she let me drive her around when we did Chevy Test Drives at Blissdom Canada last year… we looked great in that Camaro. She is also the MacGyver of the craft and DIY world.
