I was a bit shocked this year when I was one of the bloggers selected to participate in the Downtown Halifax Business Commission’s Big Day Downtown – I’m the Queen of Suburbia, not some urban hipster (even though I do rock a mean scarf from time to time). In reality, until 2009 I actually lived and worked downtown – originally in Dartmouth and then made the move Halifax side.
My first instinct was to take my $150 Downtown Halifax Prepaid Visa and go blow it on delicious food. That may have also been my second and third instinct as well. The three fateful cards that I drew to help inspire my Big Day at the launch party pulled at my Mommy strings though, and against by better (and gluttonous) judgement, I decided that my #BigDayDowntown would be all about Chelsea.
The three cards that I drew were Playful, Refreshing & Cheerful. If that doesn’t scream 4 year old, I don’t know what does. We were going to Experience it All…
From Timberlea, we caught Metro Transit #21 and then transferred to the #2 to get Downtown. When we got there, we both were thirsty and we had to go find Chelsea a hat because I (as usual) forgot hers. It’s no secret that I am a sucker for a slice, so I grabbed one of those too… it was yummy. Chelsea chose her own hat at one of the vendors along the Waterfront…Arrgh!
Once we were hydrated and protected from the sun, there was no escaping the Waterfront Playground. We’ve had lots of fun here over the past four years, and love the new playground since it re-opened last spring.
I had to coerce Chelsea from the playground as we had 2:00 tickets for the Harbour Hopper, a hot commodity, but I had thought ahead and booked them online the night before. We both enjoyed the city & harbour tour in this amphibious vehicle… even though Chelsea was very bummed when she found out that it didn’t actually go under the water, which got some laughs.
After our tour, we headed towards Strange Adventures, which was Chelsea’s top stop. She’s her Daddy’s girl and she loves her comics. She got to pick out whatever she wanted and she picked up a few Tiny Titans graphic novels and a collectable toy. She loved it in here (I was a bit out of my element, haha).
The ocean breezes and shopping made us both hungry and Chelsea only wanted one thing – rice. Yep, rice. She absolutely loves the rice from Mezza Kitchen (formerly Venus), and since I love their chicken shawarma, we always share a Shawarma Plate and theirs is the best.
After a late lunch/early dinner, we headed towards the Discovery Centre. We are already members, so we went in for a quick visit but then Chelsea got to stop and go in the store up front, a rare treat for her. After a lot of humming and hawing, she selected an octopus puppet, which became her mouthpiece for the rest of the day, including during our grand finale, Freak Lunchbox, where she picked up her two favourites, (UK) Smarties and Vanilla Jelly Bellies (and some fake boogers of course). Sadly, our Big Day was over, hubs picked us up and we headed back to suburbia, full of tales of lobster hugging, Batman, statues and the best rice ever.
