I can’t believe that I never had Muddy Buddies (Puppy Chow, Puppy Food, Monkey Munch, what have you) until last Christmas. I am somewhat thankful though as it is every bit as addictive as each recipe says it is. The first batch I made this year barely made it a day… oopsie.
The ‘Holiday’ part comes simply from the addition of a few handfuls of Holiday M&Ms. This recipe is why I will always have a box of Chex in the cupboard for ever more. If you bake, you have the rest of the ingredients on hand anyway.
Holiday Muddy Buddies
Adapted from Betty Crocker
- 9 Cups Rice Chex
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups icing sugar
- 1 cup (or so) Holiday M&Ms
Measure the Chex into a large bowl. Then, microwave the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter uncovered on high for one minute; stir. Microwave about 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in the vanilla. Pour mixture over the cereal, stirring until evenly coated.
Evenly sprinkle the icing sugar on top and gently toss until covered (some folks do this in a large zipper bag, I’m lazy and it works just fine).
Mix in M&Ms and lay out in a single layer on parchment or silicone mats to dry and then store in an airtight container.
